Kids Health and Fitness

When it comes to health and fitness, I’m not a big fan of the fear approach. We are

pleasure seeking creatures and are motivated as such. Avoiding pain is a different

animal altogether. While it might get someone moving initially, the fear factor in health

related lifestyle change dissipates rather quickly as a motivator. That being said, I read

a statistic that scared me. I see the truth of it all around me...at The Tribe, at my kids’

schools, in the grocery store, at the doctors office. And as voraciously as I read, seeing

these numbers in black and white gave me concrete room for pause.

One-third of all children in America are affected by excess weight or obesity, putting

them at high risk for asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and heart disease. We’ve all heard about the obesity epidemic and I’m “in the Biz,” so to speak. So what was the show stopper for me? If we don’t overcome this problem now, experts predict that one-third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. ONE-THIRD. DIABETES. Diabetes is no joke. Ask anyone who has it. Ask them what is involved and what they have to do every day to stay healthy. The kicker? Aside from child onset Type I diabetes, which is rare and NOT a disease of lifestyle, Type II is infinitely preventable!

We all have our priorities in terms of how we spend our time and our money. I often

hear women say that healthy food costs too much and takes too much time to prepare. I hear that they don’t have time to exercise or to make sure that their kids exercise. My

answer? You either make time and spend money on health, or I guarantee you will

spend it on sickness.

Our kids spend long days sitting in school. They come home and they often sit more. Our children maybe have 30 minutes of recess a day, and not all kids use that time to be active. Only six states require physical education in every grade, only 20% require daily recess, and 2 out of 3 kids are inactive.

We must make time for health. For ourselves. For our kids. Disease is expensive. Very expensive. In time, energy and money. We must get active and get our kids active. Make it family time to walk or bike or run. These activities cost nothing. Get your kids involved in the kitchen and at the grocery store. Educate yourself. Find a farmers markets where produce is plentiful and cheap. Help your kids find a form of exercise they love and can stick with. Learn how you can set the best possible example for a healthy life.
